The Long Story...
My journey into internet land and business consulting began
almost by accident. In my final year at Smith
College
in 1998, our Geochemistry professor required that we present
our final research papers in web site format. And the presentation
had to be pretty. Luckily, Smith had state-of-the-art
computer labs and practically one-on-one training.
So I learned how to do HTML programming and put a web site
up.
Previously, I'd focused my Associate's degree from Santa
Fe Community College in Graphic Design (1995), so
I already had a small concept of graphic softwares like Adobe
Photoshop, as well as layout and design.
I
graduated in 1998 with a BA in Geology and
returned to my hometown in Gainesville, FL. After an exhaustive
job search for an entry position in environmental science
or geology (soil and water) without any luck, I resigned to
find what work I could get by with in Gainesville. A friend
of the family hired me for the short-term job of designing
their website in the WYSIWYG program Frontpage by Microsoft.
They basically paid me to learn to use this program, and my
"final" was the resulting web site for Energy
Conservation Services
at www.ecs-solar.com
.
Next came my gig with Jade
and Pearl, Inc.
Gloria Startia, the owner, hired me on as a general office
manager and webmaster. I was given almost total autonomy
and being self-directed and highly motivated, I learned a
lot in this position, which lasted three years from
1999-2002.
I became obsessively fascinated with computers and the internet
especially. I was profoundly impressed by its ability
to simplify and automate administrative business functions.
What we always need as small business owners is more time.
I saw that if the proper infrastructure was put into
place, more time for more profitable business activities could
be gained.
My niche with Jade and Pearl, and with many small business
owners from the older generation, was my fearlessness in tackling
new technology knowledge - the ability and delight in learning
and applying this foreign language to our business operations.
I also started up and ran two other businesses
with my "partner" at the time, which tested my organizational,
managerial, and sheer tenaciousness abilities. These businesses,
a used car lot and an import jewelry distributer, lasted a
little over two and three years, respectively.
My duties included bookeeping and tax filing (local, state
and federal), marketing (offline and online), website design
and maintenance, and yes "hustlin'". Don't ask what
my partner did. Let's sum it up by saying I would have succeeded
if there had been two of me.
What is amazing when I think about it is that I learned the
ropes and did the job simultaneously. Now, four years later,
I'm a rugged road warrior when it comes to small business...I've
been there.
All the while, the internet made it possible for me to do
this juggling act. And my love for it grew and grew. I learned
as much as I could about design, marketing and e-commerce.
And from it, a little business called Dynamic! sprang forth.
*NOW* There's nothing like the PRESENT! Right? It's truly
a gift. So here I am NOW.
Got a Bubs to feed and LOVE with time and little stress.
Win bread, no stress...hmmm. C'est possible? With a little
help from my friends like Tolle and Shinn, I am getting there.
My interest right now is in Dynamically driven, database
web sites. So I'm learning how to build these kinds of sites
using PHP and MySQL. You want to give me some practice in
putting together your site? It is a deal, because I charge
much much less, still put out quality, if at a somewhat slower
pace until I get the gist ... which knowing me, won't be too
long.
I want to go back to school to become Microsoft certified
as an MCSE by this summer, and then go on to Law School next
year. My dream is to then work with the National Resource
Defense Council and to send Bub to Waldorf School Pre-K through
12th grade.
In the meantime, we'll be eating organic, NON-GMO food -
little dairy, no meat, lots of fresh stuff, doing YOGA, Being
and playing outside, and reading books to our little hearts
content!
